Variety is the spice of life, some would say. And unless you're staring down a bowl of Tom Yum soup or throwing out the description card from a box of chocolates, it’s hard to find it all in one place. Depending on which side of the glass you tilt down your mouth, you may experience creamy brininess, or a savoury, vegetal acidity. Enter stage right this orange blend, the moderately incestuous lovechild of Pinot Gris & Pinot Blanc. Might stir up repressed memories of freshly sliced Mortadella at the deli counter, rolling down your window to huff gasoline at the refill station, or staining your favourite white t-shirt with Nonna’s fresh tomato sauce. Coppery in body and distinguished as a prized metallic pencil crayon, this is the closest thing to adding pop rocks to fresh simmered vegetable broth. This blend may induce a traumatic slide through one's repressed childhood fantasies.

Few producers in the world of natural winemaking have experienced a rise as meteoric as Martin Wörner of Marto Wines. In the years leading up to taking over his family’s vineyards in Flonheim, Rheinhessen, he learned the art of viticulture at acclaimed producers Gut Oggau & Matassa, gaining invaluable firsthand knowledge on biodynamic winemaking before harvesting and releasing his first vintage from 2016. Acclaim quickly poured in from around the world, and as he slowly increased production, he met Toronto native Alanna LaGamba, becoming both life and winemaking partners, working together on Marto Wines while she also operates Vin De LaGamba, known for the magnetic Frauenpower, her take on German Lambrusco. Located in the western part of Rheinhessen, the village of Flonheim lay mostly on sandstone soil, and while warm during the summer, receives some of the lowest levels of precipitation in all of Germany. Marto’s wines contain no additives of filtration of any kind, providing a truly unique expression of one of the most renowned winemaking regions in Europe.
